Update July 29, 2010: New Assigned Commissioner’s Ruling Lifts Hold on PBI, Government/Non-profit Incentive Processing (link)

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Here’s an important update from the California Public Utilities Commission website:

Update July 29, 2010: New Assigned Commissioner’s Ruling Lifts Hold on PBI, Government/Non-profit Incentive Processing

The Commission issued a new Assigned Commissioner Ruling on July 29, 2010 that lifts the hold on the issuance of confirmed reservations for Performance Based Incentive (PBI) and government/non-profit projects.  The Ruling directs the CSI Program Administrators to resume processing and issuing confirmed reservations for all applications, including those impacted by the temporary postponement and held in queue in the order received, subject to the existing rules and processes of the program (emphasis added by Pure Power).

The Commission will continue to consider the three proposed modifications proposed in the July 9th Ruling (see below), which are 1) removal of the 8% discount rate embedded in the calculation of performance based incentive (PBI) payments; 2) reduction in the incentive rate offered for government and non-profit applicants; and 3) shifting of $20 million from the program administration budget to the incentive budget.

If the Commission adopts either of the proposed incentive modifications, it is intended that such changes would apply only on a going forward basis, applicable to new applications seeking incentives after the date of any such decision.

The Urban Times: DiCaprio tells how Inception went Solar

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Really nice article summarizing the news of the Mobile Solar Power System providing solar power to the base camp of Inception in The Urban Times – in part: “Christopher Nolan’s Summer 2010 Blockbuster smash “Inception, featuring superstar studmuffin Leo DiCaprio,  shined on more fronts that just the Box Office (so far there has been a worldwide gross over over $240 Million).  I loved the film – it was magnificent, profound and intelligent – but today I focus not on the celluloid but on the mechanism behind it.

Particularly the environmentally friendly mechanism. The film’s sets were powered by the world’s largest mobile solar power system, the S48T. This system was constructed by Pure Power Distribution is is the first of its kind capable of powering a movie base camp solely on the sun’s blessed rays….”

Catch the whole article here:

(Important note: the blockbuster film was shot in about 7 different countries and Pure Power provided solar power when the production was in LA – most including this writer seem to share the opinion that, while it would be wonderful if an entire production could be powered with solar – the technology is not quite there yet, and Pure Power is providing ‘a great start’.)

Mother Nature Network: The solar-powered dream world of ‘Inception’

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Karl Burkart posted a great story about Inception (the epic thriller by Christopher Nolan starring Leo DiCaprio) and Inception the mobile solar power story.

Says Burkart: “The mind-blowing dream sequences of “Inception” probably left you wondering how in the world the film’s producers pulled it off. But the question of how they powered such feats of cinematic megawattage may not have come to mind. The answer will surprise you … the sun!”

Zap2It: Leonardo DiCaprio plants ‘Inception’ solar movie power idea

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

From the website Zap2It: Leonardo DiCaprio posted a link on his Facebook page to an Ecorazzie item about the solar panels used on his new hit film, “Inception.”

So in essence the environmental activist actor has used the film’s thesis — that an idea is the most virulent and powerful tool — to plant the idea about the future of green movie-making.”

Solar Feeds: Pure Power completes 5th solar base camp

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Solar Feeds has picked up our story about our work in feature films, with the references to our work in all entertainment, events, military, and ah, yes, the “frosty” project…

Pure Power completes 5th solar base camp

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Pure Power has just completed work on our 5th feature film, providing clean solar power to the base camp of Steve Carrell’s latest feature film project. Principal photography wrapped recently, and now we’re in discussion to provide Mobile Solar Power Systems to our 6th feature.

The entertainment business is really going the extra yard to green up their productions and operations, and we’ve been fortunate to have contributed to that development.

Stay tuned for more feature film news, along with TV series (last season we provided solar power to Criminal Minds – there are more in the works); rock concerts like Sasquatch; events like the ESPY Awards and LA Marathon; an “artsy” project; a “microgrid” project and a “frosty” project that are making our lives really interesting.

NY Times: Save fuel, save lives

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Nobel prize winning columnist Thomas Friedman blogged this week about the predictable results of dependence on fossil fuels and poorly insulated structures: death and destruction. (By inference, one could add that use of the military-grade Mobile Solar Microgrid, such as the one developed by Pure Power, could help reduce this threat).

Making our country more energy efficient is not some green feel-good thing. Retired Brig. Gen. Steve Anderson, who was Gen. David Petraeus’s senior logistician in Iraq, e-mailed to say that “over 1,000 Americans have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan hauling fuel to air-condition tents and buildings. If our military would simply insulate their structures, it would save billions of dollars and, more importantly, save lives of truck drivers and escorts. … And will take lots of big fuel trucks (a k a Taliban Targets) off the road, expediting the end of the conflict.”
