The integrated system of solar and bio fuel generators is believed to be the first scalable hybrid system working in the Entertainment Industry.
For as long as anyone can remember, rumbling diesel generators have powered movie base camps; the “traveling back stage” of talent trailers, makeup, costume, production and catering that support a production as it moves from location to location.
Now, in the same way the Prius® has taken the automobile world by storm, Pure Power Distribution (Santa Monica, CA) has delivered the Solar Hybrid Base Camp Power System™ that can be scaled to power the base camp of any size production.
Solar First
The Pure Power Solar Hybrid Base Camp Power System automatically prioritizes solar power to reduce the use of fossil fuel and its effects, while ensuring consistent power. The System includes:

- Our most advanced Solar Hybrid Mobile Solar Power System™ – , which is Green Seal-certified by the Environmental Media Association, is an integrated solar/biodiesel power plant capable of producing 166 Amps (18,000 Watts STC) of consistent power and 327 Amps surge (36,000 Watts, STC). When configured with eco-fitted Solar Star Waggons, the Hybrid S10 can recharge from solar at up to 7200 Watts per hour (STC).
- Solar Star Waggons, eco-fitted with solar panels to produce an additional 2,400 watts of solar power per trailer
- Real-time reporting: clients receive real time online web-based reporting from Solar Hybrid Base Camp Power System tracking the solar power produced, the power used, CO2 and other environmental impacts via a custom web portal that is password-protected for the client if needed.

A few months back we blogged about how we provided power for a super green production of a video series for the National Wildlife Federation.
The production, made in conjunction with a nationwide campus competition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions called Chillout, had a wide variety of stars, producers, musicians, directors and producers involved.

Much is made in the sustainability press and blogosphere about the environmental bottom line. In the Elkington taxonomy of financial, social and environmental benefits, the second bottom line often takes a back seat to the environmental. At minimum, second bottom line benefits are challenging to accurately quantify, and often point to issues that are not easily solved by a project, a product, or even a company.
At Pure Power, we strive to produce environmental results with our corporate work, but almost every member of the team contributes to the community in a meaningful way through non-profit work. Below is a short list of the non-profit organizations that PPD staff support, work with, and in some cases, lead:
- Young Presidents Organization
- Camp Max Strauss
- World Affairs Council
- Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors
- Forest Stewardship Council
- Doctor’s Global
- Hayward Corporation
- New Zealand Alpine Club
- American Alpine Club
- Digital Academy
- California Waterfowl Association
- Wings Medical Transportation Services
- Rotary International
- Danville, CA Concours d’Elegance
- Environmental Media Association
- Monte Vista Housing Association
- ecoAmerica

Last week the executive directors of the Forest Stewardship Council-US met in Los Angeles for their quarterly board meeting. Power for the meeting, including all the computers and communications devices, was produced by a Mobile Solar Power SystemTM.
As we have seen at many such events, the power supply available through our solar systems far exceeded the demand. However, the FSC, whose standards represent the world’s strongest system for guiding forest management toward sustainable outcomes, values a thoughtful approach to every decision that impacts the environment. Utilizing renewable power from the sun rather than electricity produced by damming rivers or burning fossil fuels embodies such environmental vision.

On March 7th, Pure Power was very fortunate to participate as sponsors of an event called “Faces of Our American Heroes” at the renowned Raleigh Studios in Hollywood. The event was created to provide special wheelchairs for troops who were disabled in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our Chair Scott Chaplan and CEO Norris Lozano attended the event on behalf of the company and were in amazed by the production, and the emotional response to the wheelchairs by the soldiers.
The impact of the event was capt
ured nicely on the local news.
A pair of new PurePowerDTM Mobile Solar Power SystemsTM were on hand to provide pure sine-wave solar-generated power for a variety of electrical needs. We had a single-phase 10 kW unit running all the lights and audio/visual components at the cocktail event, and a new 3-phase “Super 10″ kW unit running the main kitchen refrigerators and ovens.
This was the first time our new Super 10 was demonstrated, and it “barely broke a sweat” in providing an average of 30 amps of power to the kitchen. The Super 10, specially

configured for the entertainment industry, is 3-phase and provides 26,000 watts of power at surge, and 13,500 watts continuous (72 amps per leg surge, and 37.5 amps per leg continuous), and 1,020 amp-hours of power. Cam locks, a spider box and other industry specific features are also included.

A huge California wind farm got an assist from the sun today – Pure Power Distribution was on hand to provide mobile solar power for the dedication ceremony of the Shiloh II Wind Project in Rio Vista, (Solano County) California. It was a glorious renewable energy photo opp, so we’ll post pictures here tomorrow.
Shiloh II operates with 75 turbines, each of which generates up to 2 megawatts of power, so the project will provide up to 150 megawatts, or enough electricity to power 74,000 homes. Some of the windmills are over 80 meters tall with a
rotor diameter of 92 meters and to be among them is simply amazing.
Should his schedule allow, this will be the third time that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will be appearing with our “Solar Genny” – the mobile solar power system. The Governor spoke with us at the Women’s Conference in August of 2008; again at the
Governor’s Global Climate Summit in October, and now here in Rio Vista. We believe that, with a product that’s completely designed, built and distributed in California, providing
green jobs in California, and a jump start into the use of
solar tax credits, that the Governor and Pure Power are aligned on the issue of renewable energy.
Pure Power mobile solar power systems are a completely natural fit for this event, as with virtually any off-grid situation such as construction sites, movie sets, mines, disaster sites, farms, vineyards and ranches. All of these share: a remote (off-grid) location, the need for reliable source of power (the sun) delivered reliably (our system) that leaves no carbon footprint (no fumes or emissions here) and can be taken away without worry about environmental remediation from diesel spills or leaks.

The last few weeks have been quite exciting for us at Pure Power. The appearance of our Mobile Solar Power System (TM) at the Environmental Media Awards was very well received, and also quite productive in terms of business interest. The entertainment industry has clearly caught on that mobile solar power will save productions lots of money, help manage budgets, improve the workplace and help “green up” their businesses.
Last week, we were one of only 30 sustainable technology companies invited to the Governors’ Global Climate Summit hosted by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Governor stopped by the PurePowerD display to speak with Scott Chaplan, our Chairman, and David Watson, our Vice President of Sales to hear about Pure Power Distribution and our unique mobile solar generator. Read about our encounter with the Governor here.
Having worked in feature films for many years, Governor Schwarzenegger no doubt understands the environmental challenges production sets face, and also the opportunity to help these productions reduce emissions, save money on energy costs, and create California jobs.
Our “PurePowerD” solutions carry over to many industries that are important to California: agriculture, construction, and other types of entertainment such as sports and music performances.
